Food Addiction--is it real?
| There is now evidence that some people develop specific brain patterns which are similar to substance-dependent people according to the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale. So, food addiction is real.
This means that people who have signs of food addiction may struggle with increased cravings and stronger motivations to eat in response to food cues an may feel more out-of-control when eating highly desirable foods. So, compulsive eating may be driven by an increased anticipation of food REWARDS and that addicted individuals are more likely to be physically and psychologically reactive to triggers such as advertising.
Food addiction study Yale Food Addiction Scale pdf
In my experience with thousands of patients, I would note that very few patients become addicted to drugs or alcohol after losing weight. Probably 5% of patients require chronic narcotic pain medication before surgery. Perhaps half of those eventually stop those medications.
However, many patients do begin to shop more as they lose weight and begin to run out of clothing to wear. I can only think of a few patients or families who feel that they became "addicted to shopping" spending unreasonably, etc.
Alcohol use is influenced by many factors, including stress and environment. I am aware of a few patients who have problems with excess alcohol after the surgery.
The biggest problem remains food. Eventually, the anticipation of pleasure and reward can make snacks, chips, sweets, fast-food, and nuts creep back into the daily routine. It does require separation from the advertising stimulus and re-training your subconscious food cues to view those foods as tasteless, unhealthy, and negative.
